Cultivation Technician Job Description

Summary of Role

To facilitate cultivation activities and garden production to include monitoring environmental factors, plant heath analysis, equipment and tools maintenance, watering and fertilization system utilization, pest prevention, and all other aspects concerning crop management and facility operations.  The Cultivation Technician will report directly to the Cultivation Manager and is an essential member of the crop production team.

Qualifications and Skillsets

The Cultivation Technician must minimally have a high school diploma or General Education Degree (GED).  Ideal candidates possess basic horticultural knowledge (indoor/outdoor, small/large scale, hobby/professional) and any commercial experience is a plus. This position needs to be a self-motivated critical thinker focused on operational efficiencies, have respect for and carefully follow company SOPs and compliance guidelines (company and state mandated), complete work assignments according to a strict schedule of tasks, and provide consistent manual labor to support cultivation goals from seedling to harvest. Preferred professional characteristics include disciplined time management, ability to closely follow directives from the Cultivation Manager, and the ability to meet production goals.


Position Responsibilities and Expectations

  • Assist with all aspects of the company’s garden operations (propagation, vegetative, flower, and post-harvest phases) by following set production schedules, facility best practices, specific plant phase SOPs, and safety and sanitation guidelines.

  • Foster good plant nutrition practices through utilization of synthetic compounds and natural biologic additives as directed by the Cultivation Manager.

  • Provide manual labor when and where required as it relates to transplanting procedures, pest management, plant movement, cloning and/or seed germination, pruning and de-leafing, and post cultivation harvest actions.

  • Ensure all facility PPE requirements are met and that PPE is applied and used correctly depending on the task and products to be used.

  • Maintain a clean and sanitary work environment to prevent and mitigate contamination, keep employees safe and healthy, and ensure regulatory compliance with state and local regulatory agencies.

  • Collect and analyze water effluent for chemical evaluation to ensure pH values, PPM parameters, and EC are within set range.

  • Record plant growth metrics, fill-out production logs, complete checklists, and accurately document harvest batch information through all growth phases.

  • Adhere to all bio and physical security measures outlined in the facility policies and SOPs to create and maintain a safe, secure, and compliant workplace environment.

  • Utilize required production tracking software platforms and their associated items (i.e. METRC and RFID tags) and embrace responsibilities for accuracy of inventory, compliance reports, and execution of software engagement/actions.

  • Assist the Cultivation Manager and other garden team members with new employee training, existing employee continuing education, and vendor/service provider training. The Cultivation Technician will also maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending workshops, conferences, and establishing personal industry networks.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

This is a hands-on agricultural-style position based on full cultivation activities and product responsibility for the company’s operations.  The Cultivation Technician handles routine, detailed concepts and problems, balances multiple tasks simultaneously, and is a dependable member of the cultivation team regarding punctuality and performance.  The Cultivation Technician will be tasked with manual labor activities requiring the full range of body mobility to include standing most of the workday, fine motor skills for plant manipulation, working in warm humid environments, and the ability to lift a minimum of 50 – 100 lbs. of weight.  The Cultivation Technician will need to demonstrate proper ergonomic form and posture, follow all OSHA guidelines and requirements while on site to ensure a safe workplace, and overall be a durable employee with respect to the physical requirements of the cultivation team’s assigned tasks. 

Travel

Any/most travel will be primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be expected for emergency supply runs and conference attendance.

Desired Employee Attributes

  • Current state program employee badge and any associated/required agricultural certificates;

  • Experience and competency operating an automated cultivation control system (Argus, Rhythm, Priva); and

  • Employment experience in a regulated cannabis program (medical or adult use).


Additional Employment Requirements

  • Individuals applying must be a minimum of 21 years old;

  • The ideal candidate must be able to obtain the necessary credentials for employment in the state’s medical and/or adult use cannabis programs; and

Manager Job Description

Summary of Role

To supervise and manage the daily operations of the company’s cultivation facility, including physical labor (plants and equipment) as well as digital work (software and reporting). The Manager will oversee the performance of garden employees, educate and train staff, maintain production documents, and operate compliantly per state program rules and regulations.

Qualifications and Skillsets

Ideal candidates will possess three to five years of managerial in operations, supervising more than 20 people at one time. This position needs to be a manager of people, discipline-driven, detail-oriented regarding notes and numbers, and able to communicate effectively. Preferred professional characteristics include a solutions-forward approach to problem-solving, respecting set goals and striving for expected results, proficiency in computer operating systems and associated applications, and the ability to plan strategically. The Manager should have high-level knowledge of leading a team of 20-30 employees and know how to create positive workplace relationships.

Position Responsibilities and Expectations

  • Equipment Maintenance: Perform routine inspections, maintenance, and repairs on mechanical equipment and machinery.

  • Troubleshooting: Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical issues to identify and implement effective solutions.

  • Tool utilization: Utilize a variety of hand tools, power tools, and wrenches to disassemble, repair, and assemble mechanical components.

  • Collaboration: Work closely with the engineering and maintenance teams to support project requirements and ensure equipment reliability.

  • Understand the principles and utilization of injectors, electrical conductivity, and pH meters, pumps and irrigation systems, and light meters and associated readings.

  • Maintain comprehensive and accurate inventories of required cultivation supplies such as fertilizers, growth media, pesticides, fungicides, trellis, employee PPE, and all other customary and usual materials, tools, and utensils for commercial cultivation.

  • Uphold staff and facility outcomes by providing ongoing education and training on plant science, best practices, cultivation equipment, workplace safety (federal and state), and other critical topics. Further, the Manager will apprise garden staff members of day-to-day job results.

  • Effectively manage a cultivation team of 20+ individuals, ensure that all employees adhere to company policies, SOPs, security procedures, and state regulations, and provide corrective actions/discipline when applicable.

  • Present a summary of plant growth activities, staffing plans, production schedules, budget needs, and supply chain considerations to senior leadership on a regular basis.

CERTIFIED PESTICIDE APPLICATOR

Position Summary

The Certified Pesticide Applicator is responsible for the safe and effective application of pesticides to control pests in a variety of settings including agricultural properties. This individual will also be responsible for maintaining accurate and up-to-date records of all pesticide applications, as well as complying with all state and federal regulations related to pesticide use.

Responsibilities

  • Safely and accurately mix and apply pesticides to control pests in agricultural settings

  • Monitor and inspect properties to identify pest problems and determine the appropriate method of treatment

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all pesticide applications, including the type and amount of pesticide used, location of application, and any precautions taken

  • Comply with all state and federal regulations related to pesticide use, including obtaining and maintaining a valid pesticide applicator's license

  • Educate other employees on the proper use and handling of pesticides, as well as any necessary precautions

  • Maintain equipment and supplies in good working condition

Requirements
